Summary

Digital Atrium

From October 2, 2026 to February 28, 202 7

Signes is an audiovisual kinetic sculpture that unfolds as a generative canvas of light, movement and sound. Situated at the intersection of kinetic art, abstraction, light art and visual music, the work replaces fixed composition with a living system in constant transformation.

A grid of rotating light segments constitutes its structure. Governed by an algorithmic system, these elements trace lines, geometries and ephemeral signs on the space, combining direct light with reflections projected on the white surface. Each movement has, at the same time, a sound correspondence: angle, speed, intensity and colour intervene in the generation of the sound, making what is seen and what is heard manifestations of the same process.

Conceived as an autonomous instrument of visual music, Signes generates compositions that are never exactly repeated. A set of geometric and compositional rules, combined with a certain degree of indeterminacy, gives rise to a continuously evolving audiovisual landscape, halfway between organic behavior and digital automation.

The work dialogues with the tradition of kinetic and generative art, understanding the work not as an immutable form, but as a system of relationships and possibilities. The code, electronics and mechanisms developed by the artists thus become an extension of the sculptural language: a score that does not determine a single form, but the rules from which light, matter and sound can be continuously organized in new ways.

Playmodes is a contemporary crafts workshop .

Founded in 2006 by Santi Vilanova and Eloi Maduell, their practice moves freely between art, music, design, science and philosophy, combining conceptual and technological research with a deeply rooted “do-it-yourself” culture.

Each Playmodes project adopts its own format and scale. It can take the form of a kinetic sculpture, a piece of contemporary music, a spatial installation, an intervention in the landscape, or a scenography for the performing arts. Without defining itself by any particular medium, their works share an ongoing investigation around visual music, the perception of space, light, sound, and time.

Algorithms coexist with hand-built mechanisms. Code with optics, electronics and manufacturing. Digital processes are not treated as an end in themselves, but as tools within a broader craft, capable of giving physical form to ideas that – from multiple perspectives – consolidate a sensibility built around formal abstraction, audiovisual synchrony and generativity. Over the last two decades, Playmodes’ work has been presented internationally, from Shanghai to New York, from Sydney to Amsterdam, from Barcelona to Medellín. Their projects have received international recognition in the fields of art and design, and their works are part of institutional and private collections around the world.
