The MULBERRY Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Lleida this September has received a large donation of the painter Xavier Gosé (Alcalá de Henares, 2 July 1876 – Lleida, 16 March 1915) by the historian of the art Albert Velasco. It is a set of documents that include exhibition entries, magazines, publications, postcards or books with illustrations and annotations by the artist himself which have been compiled by Velasco over time. ” I am very excited to donate the entire collection of material and ephemeral documentation that I had formed over several years around the work of the artist Xavier Gosé ,” says the historian. For his part, the director of MORERA, Jesús Navarro wanted to thank Velasco, researcher and collaborator of the Museum, for trusting the new Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in the city to deposit what has cost him so much gather as a collector.
Until now MORERA had more than 300 works by Xavier Gosé, the latest addition of which was the acquisition of the original poster for the May Festivals of 1912 in the city of Lleida. Gosé, also known as the illustrator of modernity, after training in Barcelona and holding his first exhibition at the local Quatre Gats, in 1900 he settled in Paris, where he became -became one of the great graphic chroniclers of the time. Some of the pieces that are part of this donation can be seen in the exhibition with which MORERA will soon open the rooms of its definitive headquarters at Rambla de Ferran number 13 in the city of Lleida.
The Modern and Contemporary Art Museum of Lleida will open its doors with a large exhibition where it will show a large part of its collection. It is a fund with more than 5,000 works of art, among which we find works by the aforementioned painter of modernity, Xavier Gosé, among many others. The exhibition will be the largest ever display of the Museum’s collection, which has more than a hundred years of history, and will show an artistic journey from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. In this you can see different techniques and artistic trends with names such as Leandre Cristòfol, Xavier Gosé, Jaume Morera, Iglesias del Marquet, Antoni Garcia Lamolla, Ton Sirera, Enric Crous Vidal, Rosa Siré, Antoni Abad, Palmira Puig, Alba G. Corral or Olga Olivera-Tabeni, among many others.
