Pere Pena in conversation with Anna Sàez and Teresa Ibars

In this novel, intimate life and collective history intertwine in an intense and evocative tale about desire, sexuality, and political awareness. Through fragmentary memories and inherited voices, the narrator reconstructs a childhood and youth marked by family silences and the need to understand where we come from.

Like a tree that grows inward, each episode opens up a new layer of meaning and questions how we remember and how we explain ourselves. The figure of La Candelària, an artist and woman ahead of her time, runs through the book like a deep root, the origin of a female genealogy that is both free and fragile and that spans an entire century.

Under the skin, a tree claims touch, words and memory as spaces of resistance and dignity.

A book that interrogates the past to understand the present.

“This novel by Pere Pena is an example of how high literature and entertainment do not have to be opposites.”

Michael of Palol

“An extraordinary novel: personal memory, memory of an entire era and, above all, a lesson in wisdom about the human heart.”

Carlos Marzal.
