Neil Harbisson (Mataró, 1984) is an artist and cyborg rights activist, of British and Irish descent, and raised in Catalonia. He has been widely described as the world’s first cyborg. He achieved international notoriety when he received permission to appear on his UK passport with an antenna implanted in his skull, a cybernetic organ that Harbisson considers a new sense. His activism and artistic work focuses on raising awareness and advocating for the rights of people with technologically augmented bodies.

Since 2004, Harbisson has been using his antenna to perceive colors—including infrared and ultraviolet—through audible vibrations transmitted by bone conduction. The cybernetic organ can also receive images, chromatic data, and signals from external sources, including the internet. Its connection to satellites allows it to perceive frequencies from outside the Earth.
