Summary

This exhibition showcased the newest additions to the museum’s collections during the first half of 2022, including photographs by Palmira Puig, works created by Ferran Garcia Sevilla and Carles Hac Mor and the iconic poster for the ‘Festa de Maig’ (May Festival) of 1912 by Xavier Gosé.

In order to expand its collections in the different fields of visual culture, the museum continued with its policy of acquiring new pieces through the established mechanisms: purchases, loans and donations. The museum aims to grow steadily and thoughtfully in order to build a public collection of modern and contemporary art at the service of Lleida and its citizens.

This collection was based on:

  • The loan of nine works by Palmira Puig (Tàrrega, 1912 – Barcelona, 1978) from the Lleida Provincial Council to the collections of the Jaume Morera Art Museum of Lleida and the Museu Comarcal de l’Urgell-Tàrrega. These photographs highlighted the quality and importance of Puig’s work in the field of modern photography.
  • The donation of work by Ferran Garcia Sevilla (Palma, 1949), one of the leading figures in the return to prominence of painting in Catalonia in the 1980s, to the museum’s collection. Garcia Sevilla donated six pieces of work produced in 1979 in collaboration with the poet Carlos Hac Mor (Lleida, 1940 – Sant Feliu de Guíxols, 2016).
  • The poster for the 1912 Festa Major de Lleida produced by the illustrator Xavier Gosé was the latest piece of work to be purchased by the museum. This poster takes us back to one of the most renowned and celebrated ‘festes’ in the history of the city, when an exhibition showcasing the work of some of the great names in Lleida’s artistic history such as Jaume Morera, Baldomer Gili Roig, Antoni Samarra, Manuel Villegas and Xavier Gosé himself, was held. This exhibition would prove to be crucial in the creation of the future Jaume Morera Art Museum in 1915. Ricard Viñes and Enric Granados, two of the biggest stars of the European musical scene of the time, also performed during these festivities.
